Old computers are poisoning our environment

Rapidly changing technology, inexpensive electronics and planned obsolescence all contribute to a growing problem: hazardous junk electronics are being dumped into our landfills.

Electronic waste has become a real problem and it's getting worse. While electronic waste represents 2 percent of our trash, it contains 70 percent of the toxic waste in America's landfills. These toxins include up to 38 separate chemicals including lead, mercury, cadmium, and PCB’s.

Some states have already banned specified electronics from landfills due to the fear that heavy metals will eventually leach into groundwater. We expect this trend to continue with violators being prosecuted. We may even see the day when the offending electronics are traced to the dumper and costly cleanup penalties levied.

Now Computer Genius in Ossian has a solution. As an authorized collection point for RecycleForce, Computer Genius is testing an e-recycling program. During regular business hours, you can bring your outdated computer equipment, microwave ovens and cell phones. Computer Genius cannot accept television sets. Unlike most electronics-recycling programs, there is no charge to dispose of these items at Computer Genius. For more information call Computer Genius, 260-622-6006.

RecycleForce is recognized as the first registered electronics-recycler in the state of Indiana and has been selected to recycle e-waste for the Indiana Department of Administration. Besides helping to protect the environment, this nonprofit organization helps the community by providing back-to-work training and employment.
